The ancient Egyptians believed that in the beginning of all time the earth was covered by only water with no land in sight. A peregrine falcon flew down on a branch and suddenly there was light and land appeared out of the water. They became a symbol of rebirth and eternal life.
Peregrine falcons were treated as sacred by the Egyptians. Captive peregrines were mummified and buried in the same manner as pharaohs.
Numerous Egyptian Gods such as Ra and Horus had the heads of falcons. Ra was the king of all gods and father of creation. Horus (or Heru) was believed to give power to the pharaohs.
